When it comes to developing web content for a website, less is more and less is generally best. When someone is in need of a website, often there is the tendency to write everything you know about your topic. Why would you not, after all you are the subject matter expert.
We have become a "point and click" society. We want information now and we want it quick or we can go a million different places to get it. That does not mean that you should not share the information that you have gathered, just manage the delivery of it. Here are a few tips:
- Manage the white space. One of the quickest ways to make visitors leave your site is there is too much text on the page - too much to read. There should be some graphics to break up the text and enough white space to give the page less density.
- Subdivide your topic into different "chunks." A big advantage of having too much information is that you will never be short of sharing your knowledge with your site visitors. Have a 'part 1' of a topic and have your visitors return next month for 'part 2."
- Develop a newsletter. Find 3 or 4 linked bullet points and send out a newsletter to your clients and have the links redirect them to your website, thus increasing your site traffic.
Good luck!
